Construction of 2D and 3D rock physics templates for quantitative prediction of physical properties of a carbonate reservoir in SW of Iran

Abstract The characterization of carbonate rocks is not straightforward, as they often experience complex diagenetic processes causing them to expose wide variations in pore types. This research aims characterize the properties a reservoir with complicated porous structure through rock physics principles and tools. Two representative wells from an oil field located SW Iran were selected, two-dimensional (2D) three-dimensional (3D) templates (RPTs) constructed by employing appropriate models. porosity, water saturation, type are considered parameters affecting rock's elastic indicating quality. 2D RPTs described two terms properties. However, able simultaneously all three parameters. proposed 3D revealed underlying relationship aspect ratio, porosity. To validate RPTs, well logging data, scanning electron microscope images, thin section images utilized. also employed predict quantitatively, these predictions compared petrophysical data. average errors predicted porosity saturation RPT were, respectively, 1.22% 6.66% for A, 2.65% 8.18% B. provided sets (considering specific ratios 0.03, 0.1, 0.5), higher both wells. obtained results proved that could more accurately.
